Role Summary

This role supports a GPU‑accelerated data centre with direct‑to‑chip liquid cooling. The engineer acts decisively during power or network outages, communicates clearly on bridge calls, and understands physical systems including cooling, power distribution, cabling (DAC, fibre, transceivers), and facility chillers.

An onsite expert for incident response, this person physically investigates power failures, network outages, and cooling failures, executes emergency procedures and speaks clearly on bridge calls with remote teams (facilities, network engineering, management, clients).

The engineer must know how to check CDU status, inspect power infrastructure, replace or troubleshoot network connections (including transceivers and optics), and report observations with precision under pressure.

Responsibilities

Power Outage Response:

Immediate Assessment When power fails, verify whether it is a facility‑level outage (utility, UPS) or a rack/node level issue (tripped PDU, failed power supply).

Execute Procedures: Follow runbooks to reset breakers, isolate a faulty PDU. Coordinate with the facilities team on bridge calls.

Monitor Restoration

Post‑Outage Checks:

After restoration, verify that CDUs, switches, and servers are online.

Network Outage Response (Physical Layer)

Physical Inspection: Physically check switches, optics, DAC cables, fibre jumpers, and transceivers

Cable & Optics Swaps:

Replace suspected faulty DAC cables, transceivers, or patch cords. Re‑seat optics. Clean fibre end‑faces using appropriate tools.

Escalation: When the physical layer is clean, notify remote network engineers that logical troubleshooting is required.

Vendor escorts, documentation and verification of works.
Scheduling of node warranty repairs if needed.

Bridge Call Communication (Critical Skill)

Provide clear, concise updates on incident bridges

Avoiding speculation, report only verified physical facts.

Log actions with timestamps in the incident ticket during or immediately after the bridge.
(This is crucial for customer service credit disputes).

 

Rack & Stack: Occasionally deploy new servers. Run new DAC cables, fibre bundles, or copper cabling. Maintain asset records and good housekeeping.

Preventive Checks:

Perform daily walkthroughs of CDU parameters (flow, temperature, pressure), PDU loads, chiller setpoints, and cable conditions.

Able to lift 50 lbs occasionally.

Must be comfortable working in hot aisles, wearing PPE, and kneeling to reach under‑floor or rear of racks.
